A mum got to hold her new baby for only seconds after he was born lifeless, unresponsive and needing resuscitation, an inquest has heard.
Coby Conway had been placed in his mother s arms just long enough for his dad Luke to cut the umbilical cord, before being rushed off into the next room at Ystrad Fawr Birth Centre in Ystrad Mynach for emergency care. ....

Oil company exploring in sensitive elephant habitat accused of ignoring community concerns

ReconAfrica, a Canadian company exploring for oil and gas in Namibia upstream of a world-famous UNESCO World Heritage site that’s home to elephants and other wildlife is disposing of wastewater without permits, according to a government minister. The company is also ignoring local concerns about the impact of exploration and drilling on water supplies, homes, and animals, according to interviews and official comments submitted by members of the public.
There was scant public awareness of ReconAfrica’s plans to search for oil in this region of more than 200,000 people before
National Geographic began reporting last October on the risks drilling could pose to water and wildlife. ....

Namibia: Indigenous leaders want big oil out of Kavango Basin


Windhoek, Namibia – The Okavango Delta is home to some of the world’s most threatened species, including endangered African wild dogs and cheetah, white rhinoceros, black rhinoceros, and lions.
The delta – a World Heritage site recognised by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization – is also pivotal to the water supply for the Kalahari Desert, and its unique ecosystems draw large numbers of tourists eager to explore its biodiversity each year. The region holds sacred meaning for the San, an Indigenous group that is considered one of the original inhabitants of the Southern African region.
“The Kalahari means to the San people what Mecca means to Muslims,” Q7 Beckett, an Indigenous youth leader, told Al Jazeera. “It’s more than our home and more than a pilgrimage – it’s our identity. We live off this land.” ....
