Ballston Spa girls’ Alpine skiers look to stay atop the mountain | The Daily Gazette SECTIONS Shares0 The Ballston Spa High School girls’ Alpine ski team plans to stay on the top of the mountain this year. Last year’s Section II champions and state runners-up looked sharp on the slopes, starting its 2021 campaign with a first- and second-place finish during a pair of giant slalom races last week in the season opener at West Mountain. Ballston Spa finished one point behind Saratoga Springs in Ballston Spa’s first run for a second-place finish, but seniors Claire Felton, Sara Phelps along with junior Mallory Czimbal regrouped with all three finishing in the top 10 during the second run, as the team took the top spot. ....

She made her first career varsity start Wednesday night for the Blue Streaks, taking home a first-place and a runner-up individual finish at the Niskayuna Invitational. “It’s been so much fun so far,” Waters said. “I love the environment and all my teammates. We just pump each other up, focus in and hammer it every time. That’s the mindset.” ....
Ski Lines: Section II skiers ready to race | The Daily Gazette SECTIONS Shares0 No, not the blizzard last week that has all our areas open for business for the holidays. (But that is a good one.) Instead, it was tiny Mayfield, led by state champion Madison Relyea, winning the Section II girls’ cross country championship last February, beating a field of rivals from schools with much larger enrollments. Remember the film about the small school in Indiana beating all the bigs to win the state basketball championship? Think of Mayfield as “Hoosiers” on snow. Well, we now have snow again and Relyea is back for her senior year. She and her Panther teammates will be strong favorites in every meet. But while skiing is among the handful of high school sports in the state that have been cleared to compete this winter, as of right now, championship events in all sports have been canceled. The focus will be limited to Section II rivals only. ....
