James Crook (100) with the birthday card from the Queen that he is now able to read thanks to help from the charity.
An Aultbea World War Two veteran with sight loss is regaining his love of reading once more thanks to specialist equipment and support from charity Sight Scotland Veterans.
James Crook has age-related sight loss that had impacted his ability to read independently, but he was recently able to enjoy reading his 100th birthday cards – including his card from the Queen – with use of his new ‘Vario’ video magnifier from Sight Scotland Veterans. ....

A Highland veteran has regained his love of reading – and been able to enjoy his 100th birthday cards – with help from a national charity.
James Crook served in the RAF from 1940 to 1947, working as a rear gunner in the Lancaster Bombers during the Second World War and then as a dispatch rider. ....

I worry I won t see my grandson grow : Pollok veteran opens up on sight loss blow
WHEN Pollok veteran and war historian William McKinlay was told he could “wake up one morning totally blind”, he was devastated.
“I’m hoping against all hope that my eyesight is going to last me as I worry it will stop me seeing my grandson grow,” said the 69-year-old from Pollok.
As a military historian being told he was losing his sight was a blow for William, who loves reading and researching for his tours of the city’s Royal Highland Fusiliers Regimental Museum and leading educational World War lessons in primary schools. ....

David Timmins: Poignant tributes paid to 'real-life superhero'


AFTER surviving horrific wounds in an explosion in Afghanistan in 2009, David Timmins had so much to live for.
The East Renfrewshire soldier impressed family and friends with his courage as he battled back from injuries that included a fractured skull and a collapsed lung, as well as the loss of his right eye.
And life took an exciting new twist for David when he discovered his fiancée, Liane Brophy, was expecting their first baby in July.
His tragic death on January 6 means he will never get to meet that baby but loved ones will make sure the new arrival knows all about his heroic deeds. ....
