For 75 years, active-duty members of the British military have served as stewards at Wimbledon, the annual tennis “Championships” held at the storied All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club. Since 1946, uniformed men and women from the Royal Army, Air Force and Navy have volunteered at the two-week summer event by taking tickets, directing visitors to their seats, and bringing water to overheated fans. ....

Over the past year, we have come to appreciate our emergency services and frontline workers more than ever before - but today we have an extra excuse to pay them tribute.
That is because today marks Firefighters Day - 24 hours in which we can reflect on the hard work, dedication and sacrifice portrayed by firefighters up and down the country who have committed their lives to protecting others. 
With that in mind, North Ayrshire Heritage Centre went a wander down memory lane to look at our own local fire heroes, centring on the history of Irvine Burgh s Fire Brigade.

Colombo (News 1st); Sri Lanka celebrated her 73rd National Independence Day under the theme, ‘Isurumath Heta Dinak-Saubhagyawath Mawubimak’ (Glorious Tomorrow & A Prosperous Motherland) in a simple, yet colour-rich ceremony at the Independence Square at Colombo.
The elegant national spectacle of the year was dignified by the presence of religious leaders of all major denominations and other guests.
An eye-catching tri-service Guard of Honour, was accorded to the President, followed by the customary 21-Gun Salute, presented by Sri Lanka Artillery Regiment. ....

Person injured after vehicle struck by waves

A person has been treated for injuries after their vehicle was struck by the waves coming onto Douglas Promenade.
Police say the casualty was dealt with by the Ambulance service.
The road has been closed between the Sea Terminal and  Castlemona Avenue (next to the bottom of Broadway) by the Civil Defence Service.
