Encinitas district school earns top honor for civic learning

Several county schools were among those earning recognition in the state’s Civic Learning Awards, which honor achievements in civic engagement in the classroom.
Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye and Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond co-sponsor the award program, now in its ninth year. They hosted a virtual meeting with the top schools recently.
“I’m so proud of these schools for keeping students engaged in civic learning during a pandemic, especially as our country grapples with serious social and civic conversations and actions that can reimagine governance at all levels,” Thurmond said in a statement.
Cloud Campus in the Encinitas Union School District was among 32 California schools to receive the top-level Civic Learning Award of Excellence. Cloud Campus is a distance-learning option that integrates civics lessons into elementary classrooms. It was offered in 2020 to 430 students. The children participated remotely in activities, ....

Over 1,900 Anaheim Union High School District students will earn State Seal of Civic Engagement

The Anaheim Union High School District has announced that over 1,900 AUHSD students will earn the new State Seal of Civic Engagement, which encourages students to become active participants in democracy.
To earn the seal, students must demonstrate excellence in civic learning, participation in civics-related projects, contributions to their community, and an understanding of the United States Constitution, the California Constitution, and the American democratic system.
“The future of our democracy depends on a knowledgeable and actively engaged citizenry,” said State Board President Linda Darling-Hammond. “With this new seal, we hope to prepare all students with an empathetic concern for others, a deep understanding of democracy, and the civic engagement skills needed to contribute to the welfare of their local communities, the state, and the country.” ....

Kairos Public Schools earns Civic Learning Award of Distinction
VACAVILLE Kairos Public Schools was awarded a Civic Learning Award of Distinction by a panel of judges and educators selected by the Chief Justice’s Power of Democracy Steering Committee, both the school and state’s courts announced Tuesday in separate press releases.
Chief Justice Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye, head of the state’s judicial branch, co-sponsors the awards with State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond to honor outstanding achievements in civics education.
Kairos Public Schools previously earned a lesser Civic Learning Award of Merit for the past four years.
The awards program has three award levels: Exemplary, Distinction and Awards of Merit. Kairos is one of three schools in California this year to earn Distinction status. ....
