Source of the Boil Advisory in West Plains and How Drought Conditions Affect Water PipesOzark Radio News

The Boil Water Advisory continues on its third day for the city of West Plains. The West Plains chief water plant operator explained "The water main break (on Sunday) on south 17 created significant water use on top of already dry conditions which called for multiple wells to run for longer than normal. 14 well started pumping in water with high turbidity causing our combined effluent turbidity meter reading to rise over the limit of 1 NTU. We did maintain good chlorine residuals for the duration of the turbidity spike; this did help greatly to combat any bacteria that was still in the water after the treatment process. We have since shut off 14 well and resumed normal operating levels." Cody Sanders with the City of West Plains explains about what turbidity is: Temporary closures include the West Plains Senior Center and the Splash Pad at the Children's Park on Broadway. The advisory issued is due to high turbidity in a city well and a water main break Monday morning. A boil advisory is a precautionary measure issued to alert residents when there is a potential for compromised water quality. It is recommended that customers boil all water used in the preparation of food and beverage for consumption for 2 minutes. High turbidity means that there are a lot of particles suspended in the water and light cannot get through. In addition, the city is asking all residents to make water conservation efforts. Water Conservation Tips: OUTDOOR TIPS: • As much as 80% of domestic water usage occurs outside the Home on lawns and gardens. • Adjust your irrigation timer monthly – lawns require different amounts of water in winter than in spring. Thus irrigating with the same amount of water results in an incredible waste of water. • The most efficient
