City of Newcastle will borrow funds for gallery extension July 28, 2021 City of Newcastle Council will borrow the funds needed for the Newcastle Art Gallery Expansion. At last night’s Council meeting Councillors endorsed to borrow $22.6 million by way of a low-cost loan over 10 years as he preferred funding pathway for the expansion project. The funding will be borrowed via a fixed interest rate loan of 0.88 per cent – a Loan Borrowing Report will be separately submitted seeking Council approval to borrow funds from NSW Treasury Corporation (T-Corp), including a capital expenditure review in accordance with Office of Local Government guidelines. City of Newcastle said they will continue to seek Federal and State grant funding up until the time of borrowing loan funds from T-Corp to ensure all available grant funding options have been exhausted prior to commencing the project. ....
STOCKTON BEACH: Sand Sources Found for Dredging Works July 1, 2021 A geological survey has identified three sources of sand suitable to replenish the heavily eroded Stockton Beach. NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro has confirmed the survey identified offshore dredging sources in Stockton Bight, north of the Pinnacles Reef and close to the entrance of Newcastle Harbour. “These results follow a six-week exploration program carried out earlier this year and information about the options will be provided to the City of Newcastle Council to consider its next steps to improve the beach.” Council will need to apply for a mining licence to conduct the dredging work, which is otherwise illegal in NSW. ....
Deputy Premier A solution to the coastal erosion issues plaguing Stockton is significantly closer to being realised with work carried out by NSW Government scientists identifying three sources of offshore sand for beach renourishment. Deputy Premier and Minister responsible for resources John Barilaro today announced details about potentially suitable bodies of sand in the Stockton Bight; one located near the entrance to Newcastle Harbour and two located further east of the beach foreshore at Stockton. “I promised we would deliver the necessary survey work to help find suitable sand in the area and the options announced today will now be reviewed by the City of Newcastle as part of its plan to tackle erosion at Stockton Beach,” Mr Barilaro said. ....
City of Newcastle City of Newcastle Council has awarded a tender to demolish the 59-year-old Mall Car Park, with work set to commence in early August 2021. The contract is valued at $3.7 million and will be completed by mid-November 2021. City of Newcastle commissioned a structural assessment of the seven-storey car park in March 2020, following issues with concrete spalls falling from the building. The car park has been closed since, due to concerns around public safety. City of Newcastle Director of Governance David Clarke said the next step is to safely remove the Mall Car Park and continue engaging with the community and key stakeholders on how to best use the newfound space for the betterment of the city. ....
