A federal lawsuit charging the City of Mebane discriminated against its former planning director, a Black woman, has been settled, though the terms are not public.
“All we ever say about that is the parties have reached a confidential resolution to whatever issues they had pending and that’s all I would say about that,” said Keith Bishop, the lawyer representing Montrena Hadley, the city’s former planner.
Hadley ran the city’s Planning Department for years. But as the city grew, instead of hiring staff for her to supervise, Hadley claims the city’s management, made up of white men, passed her over and effectively demoted her and then hired another white man to be planning director and her supervisor. The city maintains it hired more qualified candidates as the city grew, and a federal judge threw out most of Hadley’s legal claims last year.   ....
