Spencer's coordinator to be paid $1

Unlike other aspects of the Spencer’s redevelopment project in Mount Airy which have proven extremely costly, the contract price for a construction coordinator to oversee that effort is a bargain for the city.
In an era of mega-million-dollar deals for individuals such as pro athletes and movie actors, Charles W. “Charlie” Vaughn will rake in just one buck to serve in that advisory capacity under the pact approved earlier this month.
However, it’s really not about the money, city officials have said, with the motivation behind their contract with Vaughn related to liability considerations.
Vaughn has filled the coordinator role for the Spencer’s textile mill redevelopment on a volunteer basis since being appointed by the Mount Airy Board of Commissioners to do so in August 2018. ....

City decides to buy fire, other vehicles

A Siloam man was killed Monday morning when he was struck by a tractor-trailer on U.S. 52 South, near the Cook School Road exit.
Marvin H. Bledsoe Sr., of Siloam, 85, had for some reason stopped his car on the shoulder of the southbound lane of U.S. 52, then wondered into oncoming traffic when he was struck, according to North Carolina Highway Patrol First Sgt. J.M. Church.
The sergeant said officials do not yet know why Bledsoe had exited his car. “It was nearby, and wasn’t broken down,” Church said.
David Speight, interim Surry County Emergency Services director, said the incident occurred shortly after 6 a.m., when conditions were still dark. He said that Bledsoe was standing or walking in the right-hand traffic lane when he was struck. ....
