　　20 世紀 50 年代，蘇聯科學家德米特里·K·貝爾雅耶夫（Dmitry K。 Belyaev）在新西伯利亞飼養了一群狐狸。他想選育出更親近人類的後代，並且在 10 代之內就達成了這一目標。“這些狐狸就像狗一樣，會向熟悉的人類尋求接觸，離這些人靠得更近，並且會舔舐人的手和臉，”貝爾雅耶夫在 1979 年發表的論文中寫道。
　　更有意思的是，這些狐狸的外貌也同時發生了變化，比如毛皮更加斑駁，耳朵變得下垂，尾巴捲曲和顱形改變。貝爾雅耶夫指出，狗、奶牛等其他許多被馴化的動物也具備這樣的特徵，他將這種現象稱為“馴化綜合徵”（domestication syndrome）。
