Chicopee DPW can now shut off water service for nonpayment of sewer, storm water fees

CHICOPEE Business owners or residents who fail to pay their sewer or stormwater bills could now find themselves with no water.
Facing more than $1 million in unpaid water and sewer fees this year, the city’s Board of Water and Sewer Commissioners recommended changing the ordinance that will allow the Department of Public Works to shut off water service to any home or business that does not pay either of their water, sewer or stormwater fees.
In the past water has only been shut off if people did not pay water fees. Sewer service is never turned off, so people who fell behind in payments often would ignore their sewer bills but continue to pay water bills. ....
