New UK immigration watchdog appointed


A new Independent Chief Inspector of Borders and Immigration (ICIBI) has been appointed for a three-year term it has been announced. David Neal will replace David Bolt and will begin his appointment on Monday, 22 March. UK Home Secretary, Priti Patel, welcomed Neal’s appointment.
 
The ICIBI is an independent border and UK immigration watchdog sponsored by the Home Office and reports back on the efficiency and effectiveness of the UK immigration, asylum, nationality and customs functions carried out by the Home Secretary, Home Office officials and others on Patel’s behalf.
Mr Neal has previously served as the head of the Royal Military Police and Commander of the 1st Military Police Brigade, according to a press release on the government’s official website. ....

Inspection Report Published: An inspection of the Home Office's use of sanctions and penalties


Publishing the report, David Bolt said:
The Home Office is able to make use of a range of sanctions and penalties to encourage and enforce compliance with the Immigration Rules. Some of these are directly within its control, while others are “owned” and administered by other government departments, agencies or third parties with input from the Home Office in the form of data, typically about individuals who do not have right to enter or remain in the UK or whose rights, for example the right to work, are restricted.
This inspection examined how efficiently and effectively the Home Office used these sanctions and penalties, which included looking at what it was seeking to achieve with each and to what extent it was succeeding. ....
