ASHEVILLE - In a potentially history-making move, City Council will vote on whether the city school board should be picked by election or remain an appointed body as it has for nearly a century, making it the last of two in the state.
A third option that the council intends to vote on March 9 will be a hybrid model, an apparently unprecedented approach in which two Asheville City Board of Education members would be appointed and three elected to the five-member board.
Because the change would require state legislation, the council s vote would not be the final say. Instead, it would serve as a request to local lawmakers to introduce a bill for General Assembly approval. If legislators agree a school board election could be held as soon as 2022. ....
