Florida Supreme Court authorizes virtual criminal jury trials Kathryn Varn, Tampa Bay Times The Florida Supreme Court has authorized some criminal jury trials to be conducted virtually, giving courts another option to process the increasing backlog of cases caused by the coronavirus pandemic. To conduct a virtual jury trial, a defendant must consent to it, according to the administrative order issued Feb. 17. The judge overseeing the case will also consider the stance of prosecutors and, if applicable, victims in deciding whether to conduct the trial virtually. No virtual criminal trials are scheduled in Tampa Bay yet, said court officials in the Hillsborough and Pinellas-Pasco judicial circuits. However, the circuit’s chief judges said they’d be open to them if the circumstances make sense. ....

(Sixth Judicial Circuit) PINELLAS COUNTY, FL On Thursday, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis appointed Bruce L. Bartlett as state attorney for the Sixth Judicial Circuit, replacing the late Bernie McCabe. McCabe, 73, died Jan. 1 after serving as the chief prosecutor for the Sixth Judicial Court for 28 years. The Sixth Judicial Court covers both Pinellas and Pasco counties. Following McCabe s death, Pinellas-Pasco Chief Judge Anthony Rondolino appointed McCabe s longtime chief assistant county attorney, Bruce Bartlett, to serve as acting state attorney until the governor could appoint an interim state attorney. DeSantis has now chosen to keep Bartlett in the office. ....

Chris Sprowls wants the county commission to rename the Pinellas County Justice Center after late Pinellas-Pasco State Attorney Bernie McCabe. McCabe, who died Jan. 1 at age 73, “left an unrivaled legacy in the pantheon of Florida justice seekers,” wrote Sprowls, a Palm Harbor Republican and former prosecutor who used to work for the State Attorney’s Office. The letter to the Pinellas County Commission was co-signed by Acting State Attorney Bruce Bartlett, who was McCabe’s chief assistant, Pinellas Sheriff Bob Gualtieri, Pinellas Clerk of the Circuit Court Ken Burke and Pinellas-Pasco Chief Judge Anthony Rondolino also signed the letter. ....
