HOLLYWOOD RUNS THE GOLDEN GLOBES OUT OF TOWN
Last Friday, NBC-Universal extended hope for a Golden Globes show in January 2022, so long as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association acted swiftly enough to make “meaningful change.” Monday, three days later, the network announced that the 2022 Golden Globe Award show was canceled. It’s an unexpected turn of events reminiscent of the Harvey Weinstein-#MeToo cultural shift in 2017: Promising to turn over a new leaf is meaningless if the industry sees you as a noxious weed.
On May 3, 2021, the HFPA announced plans for a reform package, including a 50% increase in members over the next 18 months with a particular focus on underrepresented groups. While Dick Clark Productions and NBC–the long-time producer and broadcaster of the Golden Globes respectively supported the planned reforms, Time s Up and a group of 100 PR firms criticized the lack of given timelines for filling some of the new management positions, arguing that they woul

The 93rd Academy Awards slumped to their smallest TV audience ever. But the April 25 show was hardly alone this awards season in achieving that dubious milestone. The 10.4 million viewers for ABC’s Oscars telecast a 56 percent drop from 2020 were in keeping with a host of other awards broadcasts over the past seven months. Collectively, the four biggest awards shows the Emmys, Globes, Grammys and Oscars lost a staggering 35 million viewers from their previous telecasts in the 2019-20 season, suffering an average drop of 45 percent. The Emmys actually fared the best, losing only 9 percent of their 2019 audience (albeit from a much lower starting point than the other three).
GOLDEN GLOBES RATINGS: NUMBERS POINT TO A MASSIVE VIEWERSHIP DROP LOWEST-RATED EVENT IN HISTORY
Viewership ratings for the 78th Golden Globe Awards indicated a 60 percent decline in viewership compared to the ratings for 2020’s Golden Globes. Award show ratings have been steadily falling for years and the trend shows no signs of reversing, particularly as more film and television fans cut the cord in favor of streaming. There might’ve been a virtual red carpet on Sunday, but awards shows sell themselves on their ability to gather large groups of celebrities in-person and create a festive and star-studded atmosphere, two things that the coronavirus pandemic have effectively put on hold.
The 78th Golden Globe Awards are scheduled for Feb. 28 and will be shown on NBC. Amy Poehler and Tina Fey will return to host the ceremony, which they last led in 2015. The Golden Globes typically take place in January. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which gives out the awards, pushed the ceremony to February this year, citing the coronavirus pandemic. Streaming services, including Netflix and Amazon, dominated the list of nominees, both with their own films like “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “One Night in Miami,” which wouldn’t have relied on open movie theaters to find eyeballs even during a standard year and with movies that the streaming companies purchased from traditional studios, including Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” We’ll talk about actors, directors, and other Golden Globe nomination next week.

After losing his mother and his home, Arturs finds some consolation in joining the army. However, war is nothing like he imagined. this is the highest grossing Latvian film in decades and the first narrative feature from documentary director Dzintars Dreibergs. Based on the novel by Aleksandrs Grīns describing his experience as a rifleman in World War I, and later in the Latvian War of Independence, it’s a film that tells the expected “war is hell” narrative but expands beyond that to explore a story of growth, both in its protagonist and in the greater Latvian people.
