Yes, city officials and staff clashed over a car wash -- but also the future of Wilmington

This week, city staff and the city council fought a battle for the very soul and future of the city of Wilmington. At stake: the construction of a car wash at a major intersection in town.
It may sound melodramatic, but things at city council really got heated once discussions of a car wash came to the fore.
The lot in question is a small one- 1.5 acres right on the corner of Independence and Carolina Beach Road.
The applicant, Cindee Wolf explained the plans for a 4,000 square foot car wash, set back from the main road.
“The tract is already zoned for the commercial use,” she said. “It s a strip center with a parking lot facing Independence Boulevard. The proposal is not impacting any residents, and it hasn t received any opposition from the public in general.” ....

Cape Fear Commercial Real Estate Women (CREW) has announced the finalists and achievement award winners for its third annual Awards of Excellence, which are scheduled to be held April 29 at the Wilmington Convention Center.
The awards, which focus on the Cape Fear Region s commercial real estate sector, recognize excellence and leadership in commercial real estate, according to a Cape Fear CREW news release.
We are excited about the amount of growth and the number of diverse projects in our region; there were many great contenders that have stood out, said Gale Wallace, president of Cape Fear CREW. ....

Developers conquer part of College Acres Drive, establish student housing along UNCW border

The Cottages at College Acres will open its first phase this fall. Bedrooms rent for around $800 per month in the 45 townhome units that will soon mark College Acres Drive. WILMINGTON An assortment of developers and consultants worked for years to bring a student-housing project to the border regions of UNCW. At least 14 properties along a stretch of College Acres Drive were purchased in order to demolish nearly 10 acres of land north of the university. Between 2018 and 2020 the territory was rezoned to set the stage for a housing development that will include more than 100 townhome units. ....
