More than 450 of the world s smallest penguins have washed up dead on the beaches of New Zealand s North Island in the last six weeks, with more than half washing up in the last 10 days.

Nor that, he readily admits, he was all that mad about gardening, though he always had a soft spot for planting trees and building waterfalls.
