The Paris Review - The Making of Billy Wilder

Long before the award-winning Hollywood screenwriter and director Billy Wilder spelled his first name with a
y, in faithful adherence to the ways of his adopted homeland, he was known and widely published, in Berlin and Vienna as Billie Wilder. At birth, on June 22, 1906, in a small Galician town called Sucha, less than twenty miles northwest of Kraków, he was given the name Samuel in memory of his maternal grandfather. His mother, Eugenia, however, preferred the name Billie. She had already taken to calling her first son, Wilhelm, two years Billie’s senior, Willie. As a young girl, Eugenia had crossed the Atlantic and lived in New York City for several years with a jeweler uncle in his Madison Avenue apartment. At some point during that formative stay, she caught a performance of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West touring show, and her affection for the exotic name stuck, even without the ....

'I Care a Lot': The Inspirations Behind the Movie

Like Pike’s Marla, Pam Grier’s title character is a smart master of the double cross and steers this vastly entertaining crime movie. “This is a film that I talked a lot about with both my cinematographer [Doug Emmett] and my production designer [Michael Grasley],” Blakeson said. “It felt like a good touchstone, tonally, for where we might end up.”
As a flight attendant, Jackie Brown spends quite a bit of the film in her uniform. “She has that blue suit that she wears and now and again you’ll see that just against this bright green wall,” Blakeson said. “The joy I get from that is similar to the joy I get from seeing some of those Godard films where you have people in bright yellow or bright red or bright blue against a neutral background, and they really pop out in this sort of Technicolor/Kodachrome palette. In ‘Jackie Brown,’ she has a job where she’s always kind of wearing the same clothes, but ....

GMC to revive Hummer name in XE Ganassi tie-up
American road car manufacturer GMC has signed a deal to partner the Chip Ganassi Racing team for its entry into the maiden season of Extreme E.
GMC, which exclusively sells SUVs and trucks, is part of the wider General Motors automotive corporation, and is the second car maker to tie up with an XE team.
Its multi-year deal to sponsor CGR follows the Abt team s deal with Volkswagen Group sub-brand Cupra. It paves the way for both teams to modify the bodywork of their standardised ODYSSEY 21 XE machines to resemble the manufacturers road cars. ....

The 10 Darkest Noir Films of The Classic Era

Once the U.S. entered the Second World War, it become necessary for Hollywood to address certain aspects of grim reality which post-Depression era cinema had specialized in ignoring. After the war had ended, reality seemed to become even grimmer, and filmmakers responded by showing audiences a version of the world in which Hollywood’s conservative, romantic values were turned against themselves in the form of bleak, unremitting fatalism.
Many of these films, retrospectively identified by European critics as noir, were unsentimental tragedies, in which even the smallest errors of judgement can lead to earthly damnation. Much of the time, the world in these films, heavily swathed in shadow, is revealed by the end to be much brighter than it appears, but in more than a few cases, the stories are even darker than the shadows. ....
