back live here. i want to go to these pictures we have at the scene where search efforts are under way, frantic search efforts, to rescue a little girl, a 12-year-old little girl who was trapped in the rubble understood beneath her collapsed school in the wake of that earthquake there in mexico city. you can see there s a large crowd there of rescue workers, civilians, others just trying to help. some survivors actually coming back to the scene. little girls, little students coming back to the scene to see where things stand with the rescue efforts at that collapsed school. i want to go now to chuck ryan, task force leader for usaid and assistant fire chief in fairfax county. chuck, talk us through the biggest challenges rescue workers could be facing right now some 48 hours after the quake hit. so the real challenge especially in an earthquake situation is the potential for secondary collapse, whether it s just due to the weakened
process but it is all very situational and it just depends on the particular building encountered but it s emotionally and physically taxing work. i can t even imagine. did your team bring dogs with them as well? we deployed internationally with six live search canines and their handlers so they are with our team. they are members of our team and we train and practice with them all the time. and really the canines are spectacular. they are first ones on the rubble pile because they can pick up the scent of a live human being quickly and it helps search specialists focus in on a specific area within a collapsed structure. thank you so much for talking with me deputy chief ryan. i appreciate it. thanks, karmcarol. i appreciate the opportunity. have a good day. the moment of the quake s
go back home. the united states sending aid to nepal. a c-17 transport van departing sunday from dover air force place with dozen of search and rescue workers and 4,500 tons of cargo. the department of defense saying special force teams are already there for training and are now giving logistical and medical support to rescue workers in nepal. joining me now with more on the u.s. effort fairfax county deputy fire chief chuck ryan. welcome. thanks carol. good morning. good morning. it s nice to talk with you. tell us about the efforts under way by your department. we were one of two urban search and rescue teams in the united states authorized by the u.s. agency for international development to deploy overseas to a request for relief for international disaster.
parts of texas, oklahoma, kansas and even into missouri are expecting showers, thunderstorms. and some of these storms could produce isolated severe weather in terms of large hail, damaging winds. an isolated tornado thread, we don t think this will be near as bad as the severe weather we saw last week. tomorrow more severe weather expected from texas into sections of arkansas. high temperatures, hot in texas, 90 s. only in the 70 s in new york city. 61 degrees, very cool day in minneapolis. we want to head to the tropics because we have an area of low pressure, showers, thunderstorms off the yucatan peninsula. this system does have the possibility of becoming some sort of tropical cycle. as we head into the next couple of days very cold swatch on hand from the national hurricane center. speaking of the tropics, we want to take you over here where we do have some recipes. steve: welcome to our caribbean theme party on the plaza today. we ve got music and dancing and chuck ryan is here
