Massive water pipe rupture in hayward last sunday. A rupture that occurred right along this fault. Its moving about a fifth of an inch a year, that doesnt sound like much, but in 40 years, thats getting close to 10 inches of motion. And so 10 inches of motion is enough to stretch some pipes. Reporter hayward city spokesman chuck finney agrees, the failure was most likely caused by Seismic Movement and the old pipe was installed about 40 years ago.
