saddened to see his retirement, i respect his decision to retire to spend more time with his family. i know he loved the job and was proud to serve with honest and integrity. in his written statement, commissioner bealefeld says this was a very tough decision for me and my family. but it s now the right time for me to bring my career with the baltimore police department to a close. i am very proud of the men and women of the bpd, for all that we have been able to accomplish together over the last five years. and i am looking forward to enjoying retirement with my family and close friends. reporter: now, the mayor s statement also includes intentions to begin a nationwide search for a replacement immediately. and she says commissioner bealefeld will be involved in the transition of office. his retirement after 31 years takes effect on august 1st. and one of the things that he ll be noted for as an accomplishment is the big reductions in homicides and in gun crimes. r ....
