A man accused of stabbing his girlfriend, breaking into his wife’s home and endangering a child last month was allegedly assaulted by inmates Monday at the Montezuma County Detention Center.
According to an incident report written by Montezuma County Sheriff’s Deputy Alexander Kennedy, inmates David Maestas and Tharon Grayhair physically assaulted Christopher Wheat in his cell Monday morning until the assault was broken up by detention deputies.

A man accused of stabbing his girlfriend and breaking into his former wife’s home in Cortez will face formal charges Jan. 21 in Montezuma County Court.
The suspect, Christopher Wheat, was arrested Tuesday after police responded to a report of a stabbing at about 11 p.m. at 338 S. Harrison St.
