it is a new era in this crisis. and as we come on the air tonight, there is still a divide in this country about whether we are moving too quickly or not fast enough to reopen. tonight, as some restaurants are beginning to serve customers again, in other states, including new jersey and california, there are increases in coronavirus infections and deaths. nationwide, there are more than 1,067,000 cases of the virus, and nearly 63,000 people have died. today, we learned nearly four million more americans filed for unemployment in the lft week alone, pushing the total number out of work past 30 million. there is some new hope tonight about getting the pandemic under control. the president says he is launching an ambitious program to fast track a vaccine by january, something top experts say could be possible. our team of correspondents have all of this covered, and carter evans is going to lead us off tonight in newport beach, california. carter. reporter: for most of the day

sidewalks and streets icy this morning. storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein has joined us. tom, has the winter mix moved out? yeah, it has. temperatures have warmed up a little bit above freezing, just a couple of degrees, and that has made a huge difference. still, there are icy spots on sidewalks and steps and some driveways and parking lots that are untreated. looking at storm team 4 radar, you see all the areas of pink that you mentioned earlier pretty much dissipated. here s the pink, the icing on our legend there. any area in green is light lingering rain. it will temporarily come to an end in the metro area. there s another area of rain farther south and west of us. that will be moving into the metro area again as we get into the afternoon but not a lot of rain, just some light rain moving through. watch out still a few icy spots around. temperatures in the mid 30s. reagan national is at 35. most areas are well above freezing now so the ice is slowly melting. it d
