Letters: The Government should trust the vaccines to return us to normal life

SIR – In all my medical career (and probably since Edward Jenner introduced vaccination) I have never come across a vaccine being launched where the message seems to be: “Have the vaccine but don’t trust it.”
The whole purpose of a vaccine is protection, or at least a very attenuated form of the illness. If the Government carries on with this madness there will never be a return to normal life.

SIR – It has been suggested that key workers who have been double-jabbed should be exempt from self-isolation if they are pinged. Why not just stop self-isolation for all who have been double-jabbed?  ....

Letters: Harry and Meghan's sour grapes do a public injustice to dutiful members of the Royal family

Christopher Timbrell

SIR – One sad repercussion from the Oprah Winfrey interview is the long-term effect on the Sussexes’ children. Meghan came from a broken family, but in attacking Harry’s family she has prevented Archie and his sibling having the affinity that Harry had with his cousins and wider family.
Harry describes his father and brother as “trapped”. He seems to be confusing this with them carrying out the duties that are expected of them. It was clear from seeing the wider Royal family at the Commonwealth Day programme that they take on those duties cheerfully and responsibly – something that the Sussex children, thanks to their parents, will never have the opportunity of experiencing. ....

Letters: NHS leaders must do more to address the needs of non-Covid patients

Credit: pa/dominic lipinski
SIR – I fear that my cousin, Professor Stephen Powis, national medical director of NHS England (Letters, February 19), is being disingenuous when he implies that NHS cancer treatment has been satisfactory during the pandemic.
The statistics he cites do not reflect the misery that thousands of patients have suffered as a result of their treatments being postponed. I should know. My own treatment for prostate cancer was delayed by six months and wasn’t completed until nine months after diagnosis.
The specialist hospital that provided my care was largely mothballed. Staff later told me they had spent months twiddling their thumbs, as they had not been needed to look after Covid-19 patients. I’m assured that my prognosis will not be affected by the delay – but many people’s will be. ....
