Becoming a more modern, risk-informed regulator remains a key goal of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), its chairman Christopher Hanson said during his opening address to the regulator s 33rd
Regulatory Information Conference. Hanson, who was sworn in as a commissioner in June 2020, was designated chairman of the NRC by President Joe Biden in January this year.

According to his NRC biography, Hanson s more than two decades of government and private-sector experience in nuclear energy fields include service as a staff member on the Senate Appropriations Committee, overseeing civilian and national security nuclear programmes; as a senior advisor in the Department of Energy s Office of Nuclear Energy; and also oversight of nuclear and environmental cleanup programmes in the Office of the Chief Financial Officer.

Although Biden is pro-nuclear, there’s a chance that the new Nuclear Regulatory Commission might get out of bed with the nuclear lobby.
NRC has been too deferential to a nuclear industry eager to reduce the cost of operating nuclear plants while keeping aging plants online.

The shift comes amid a time of significant opportunities for the nuclear power sector, along with considerable challenges, including plants that are still struggling to turn profits in competitive electricity markets, difficulties building new nuclear to replace retiring reactors, and the threat of climate change impacts.
