The first time I stood in an execution chamber, what I remember most was the stillness of the room. In November 2018, I visited Angola prison in Louisiana, and saw where the state injected prisoners with a cocktail that rendered them unconscious, paralyzed their muscles, discontinued their breathing, and stopped their hearts.
The table was long and blue, its leather upholstery covering a thin layer of foam padding. There were seven discolored brown-and-blue straps that stretched across its width, each of them locked and pulled tight. At the foot of the table were two shackles, silver metal glimmering under the fluorescent lights. ....

Trump using final days to execute most federal prisoners since WWII


The Justice Department, under Attorney General Bill Barr, has killed 10 federal inmates since July 
They plan to execute three more before Joe Biden s inauguration next month
Court documents obtained by ProPublica reveal how the Trump administration is rushing to execute the most federal prisoners since World War II
Among details included in court records are that private executioners have been paid in cash and drugs have been purchased from a secret pharmacy
One execution has gone ahead while an appeal was still pending and an inmate was left strapped to a gurney while lawyers tried to remove a court order ....

In June, Attorney General William Barr ordered the resumption of federal executions. Like a kid let loose in a candy store, Barr wasted no time.
On July 14, Daniel Lee Lewis, according to his lawyer, spent the last four hours of his life strapped to a gurney, waiting for the Supreme Court to decide his fate. On July 13, a federal judge had delayed his execution on the grounds that the constitutionality of Barr’s procedure for lethal injections had not been fully litigated. The Justice Department immediately appealed to the Supreme Court. Ultimately, Lewis was executed shortly after the court, in a 5-4 ruling, paved the way for 10 people to be executed by the federal government by year’s end. ....

On Thursday, the 40-year-old was put to death at the Federal Correctional Center in Terre Haute, Indiana. Bernard was convicted of two counts of murder, among other crimes, for his involvement in the 1999 double murder of youth ministers Todd and Stacie Bagley during a carjacking and robbery, in which Bernard, 18 at the time, was one of three participants but did not pull the trigger.
