Published: 18 July 2021 ~ Calls for transparency on land tax ~ PHILIPSBURG: - While the government focused its Nelson Mandela Day message on “Madiba’s” honorable record on service to the country and overcoming challenges, Independent MP Christophe Emmanuel said he hopes government would finally focus on the principle of effective leadership for the people which were the bedrock of Mandela’s movement. The MP said he can support the call of the Prime Minister for the return of peace and quality of life in other nations, especially facing a pandemic, but stressed that on St. Maarten a decent or improved quality of life can only be achieved through honest, transparent and decisive government, “not an evasive, indirect and dishonest one.” ....
Published: 11 May 2021 PHILIPSBURG: -Independent MP Christophe Emmanuel said that it is his opinion that the board of SMMC outright lied to the Minister of VSA Omar Ottley when it stated that the Australian national it brought in to run SMMC was here on an evaluation only. “The board knew full well what its intentions were until the plan got exposed,” the MP said. MP Emmanuel highlighted last week that the board was going to appoint Grant Muddle, an Australian, as Director of the St. Maarten Medical Center. The MP also disclosed Muddle’s questionable history at his previous hospital tenure in Papua New Guinea and called for the reversal of the decision to appoint him post-haste. The MP also called for the dismissal of the entire board who feel like kings in their own castle. “So here comes the board back-peddling a lying. A total lack of acceptable corporate practices by making a “candidate” (their words) privy to hospital information he should not ....
Published: 28 April 2021 PHILIPSBURG: - Independent MP Christophe Emmanuel on Tuesday said he is still awaiting answers from Prime Minister Silveria Jacobs to questions he submitted since February 18, 2021, on issues surrounding the St. Maarten Festival Village. Issues, he said, that has since raised many rumors of possible fraudulent actions, underhanded deals, and other suspicious acts being committed at the facility by the board and other third parties. He said it would behoove the PM to provide the answers to some 40 questions that he submitted to begin to shed light on the operations of a facility that has dissolved into a public eyesore. Additionally, the MP is questioning why the board of the government foundation that runs the village has never been changed since the facility opened. ....
Published: 27 April 2021 PHILIPSBURG: - Whether or not the Constitutional Court deems the ordinances regulating the cuts to employment benefits as unconstitutional, the initiative by the Ombudsman to submit the ordinances for review “once again echoes what I’ve stressed from day one; it is not just about salary, but all income and deprives people of the standard of living that they are due.” So says MP Christophe Emmanuel in reaction to the news that the Ombudsman of St. Maarten, Gwendolien Mossel, after careful consideration, submitted the three national ordinances, in connection with cuts to the employment benefits of all (semi) public sector workers, to the Constitutional Court for review. Emmanuel said he is pleased with the move by the Ombudsman. ....
Published: 18 April 2021 ~ Questions Governor due diligence integrity ~ PHILIPSBURG: - “The Minister is simply running from the people and running from telling the truth,” says MP Christophe Emmanuel referring to Minister of VROMI Egbert Doran and the lingering questions surrounding the garbage collection contracts awarded last month to seven contractors. The general public took to the radio airwaves late last week and into the weekend complaining and questioning the garbage collection process and how certain companies won bids if they are without the proper equipment to collect garbage. “Not only is the public complaining about poor collection services in the districts, but the Minister also has yet to explain to the people about how he is tackling that situation which seems to be getting worse when you see garbage thrown about the place as you drive around,” the MP said. ....
