Peace and prosperity through landmine removal

Heidi Kuhn’s mission to replace landmines from the soil and souls of people in conflict-torn countries with sustainable farmland they could prosper from began with an utterly unscripted toast in the living room of San Rafael home.
“May the world go from mines to vines,” she said to a roomful of anti-landmine activists and landmine survivors from around the world on Sept. 21, 1997.
The group was in San Francisco to raise awareness of an international treaty to ban production, stockpiling, export and use landmines. The young mother of three serendipitously offered to host the Commonwealth Club reception in the woodsy hilltop home her grandmother Lucretia McNear Thomas willed to her on the written condition that she “do something for peace.” ....

Parish series helping parishioners find the upside of lockdown

Though the end of the pandemic is still a tiny light at the end of a long tunnel, Father Roger Gustafson wants the lives of St. Hilary parishioners to have been changed for the better by it.
The pastor of the Tiburon parish began 2021 with a 6-week online Sunday message series called “The Upside of Lockdown,” a program designed to invite the community to discover the “spiritual upside of being in confinement.”
Vaccines are rolling out slowly in California. The state’s regional stay-at-home order was lifted on Jan. 25 after nearly a full year of on-and-off public health restrictions affecting how we live, work, worship, socialize and educate our children. ....

San Rafael Carmelites to resettle in separate monasteries

Mother Dolores Sullivan, OCD, just learned she’ll be leaving the Carmelite monastery she has called home for more than 55 years in less than a month.
“I feel brokenhearted,” Mother Dolores, 98, the original prioress of Mother of God Monastery tearfully told Catholic San Francisco after a Candlemas Day Mass Feb. 2. “The Lord is giving us a whole new beginning.”
Her sisters at the San Rafael monastery have tried to shield the frail-but-attentive 98-year-old nun from the full weight of their worries after a degree of closure was issued to the monastery last May. The Vatican’s Congregation for the Institutes of Consecrated Life cited dwindling new vocations as the cause of the closure. The complications of moving four aged nuns into group housing or another monastery in the midst of a pandemic were acknowleged in a moveout date of March 1, 2021.  ....
