BILLINGS - Pregnant women and new moms across Montana now have a new tool to help take on the overwhelming mental stress and anguish that often comes with pregnancy and/or postpartum illness.
Although the service works directly with care providers, the benefits are streamlined to the patient.
It’s called PRISM for Moms, which stands for Psychiatric Referrals, Intervention and Support in Montana.
It’s the first consultation line dedicated to helping patients with perinatal mood disorders across the state. ....

Helpline provides faster mental health care for women in perinatal period


In an effort to connect women in the weeks before and after pregnancy with responsive mental health care, the state health department and a collaborative virtual psychiatry practice are partnering up to provide consultation with clinicians statewide.
For the last three months, the groups have been piloting a project called PRISM, which stands for Psychiatric Referrals, Intervention, and Support in Montana. The program is made up of a free consultation phone line or website where clinicians treating a woman in the perinatal period can call to get psychiatric teleconsultation services from Frontier Psychiatry, a virtual practice based in Billings.
Montana has a lack of mental and behavioral health providers. All but one of the state’s counties are designed as not having sufficient mental health professionals, said Mary LeMieux, who works in the Member Health Services Bureau of the state health department. ....

New hotline helps mothers in perinatal period struggling with mental health


BILLINGS - May is Maternal Mental Health month, which is a perfect time for the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services to announce their partnership with Frontier Psychiatry for a new hotline that will help expand patient care for mothers in the perinatal period.
The new consultation line is called PRISM for Moms. It stands for Psychiatric Referrals, Intervention and Support in Montana. Essentially, it helps mothers struggling through perinatal mood disorders access mental health care quicker.
The perinatal period is defined as the period during pregnancy and about a year after giving birth.
Dr. Eric Arzubi, CEO of Frontier Psychiatry, says this phase is when new mothers are particularly vulnerable to mental health problems. ....

The Montana state health department is launching a consultation line for rural health professionals treating pregnant women and moms with mental health conditions.
The line is designed to bolster Montana’s mental health resources.
A nurse-midwife in Kalispell recently was considering possible medication for a patient with a history of postpartum psychosis, but what she really needed was a specialist.
“I wanted to get her a team, and unfortunately it takes a little while to get into psychiatric care,” said nurse-midwife Christie Weseman. ....
