Erik Christian Oun, who obtained his teaching certificate in 1999 and who taught at a school in Coquitlam, also admitted telling his Grade 5 students they were “cute” and “adorable” while addressing them as “sweetheart” and “sweetie.” The British Columbia Commissioner for Teacher Regulation explained in a report on the matter that Oun had messaged the two children during the summer of 2019. ....
VANCOUVER An elementary school teacher from Metro Vancouver has been suspended for six months after having inappropriate contact with young students on social media. Erik Christian Oun was working for the Coquitlam school district when he began contacting two children over Instagram in summer 2019, and his messages showed a lack of understanding of appropriate professional boundaries, according to a consent agreement published Tuesday by the B.C. Commissioner for Teacher Regulation. Both of the children, identified in the documents as Student A and Student B, had just finished Grade 5. In separate conversations, Oun called each of them sweetie, sweetheart and some variation of goof or goofball. He later called them both Snobby McSnobbertson when they did not respond quickly to his messages. ....

A report from the BC Commissioner for Teacher Regulation says that Oun “engaged in inappropriate contact through social media” and shared “personal, sensitive, and confidential information about a student with another student.” According to the Commissioner, Oun failed to observe professional boundaries on at least two occasions. One of these occasions involved “Student A,” a fifth-grade student during the 2018-19 school year. During the school year, Oun taught Student A and “often hugged” them. After the school year had ended, he texted the student’s mother to explain that he was chatting on Instagram” with them. May 11, 2021 - 2:12 PM A former B.C. teacher was suspended for six months and ordered to take courses if he intends to teach again because he demonstrated several times that he doesn’t understand boundaries. Erik Christian Oun resigned as a teacher with School District 43 in Coquitlam after three complaints, two of which were about Oun carrying on texting students through Instagram, hugging, and in one case, shared information about another student, according to a recent decision from the Commission for Teacher Regulation. Two complaints contained many of the same facts. In both cases, Oun sought permission or appeared to seek permission from parents to text a very few select former students from his Grade 5 class in 2018-19 year and the following summer. ....
