Artists with initiative and fresh approaches deserve to be seen

SUPPLIED Play station is currently showing Learner Lover, a sculptural exhibition responding to breakups, Aotearoa’s waterways and regeneration by Whanganui-based artist Ming Ranginui. In Pōneke’s CBD there are two contemporary art spaces that exist out of our eye-line. Play station and MEANWHILE are volunteer-led artist-run galleries and studio spaces that have expanded and diversified our art scene for several years now. While they might take more time to find (up staircases or by elevator and open limited hours), they’re worth the effort to experience fresh approaches to art. These initiatives support artists predominantly at the beginning of their career, assisting them in developing their art practice and providing them with the opportunity to show their work to an invested audience.

Prison Choir release debut single Tongue

Wednesday, 16 December, 2020 - 08:52 Prison Choir are Pōneke s next generation of musicians finding their feet. Primarily directed by Xanthe (far left), Josh (back middle) and Christian (second from right). After practicing and arranging for a year before they played their first shows last month, they have already garnered a reputation as a must-see. Having seven members from diverse musical backgrounds has meant the band have amalgamated different influences and built a complex sonic structure. Members have previously played in Yukon Era, Soda Boyz, Courtney Hate, Boycrush and Fruit Juice Parade. Tongue is a fantasy song about making out with someone with honey in your mouth. Beginning with an emergent arpeggio and slightly unsettling breathy vocals, the song eventually slides into a lush chorus that washes over you, asking you to submit, Lie down on the ground and watch me, twirling around, a cell dancing.
