Herndon resident Sarah Bull remembers when she was in first grade struggling to read from a large, hardcover textbook with her family at home.
“I could just not get the hang of it,” she said. “I would sit there with my dad for hours trying to learn how to read. Even now, I’m a really slow reader. I enjoy it, but I know it definitely takes me longer than the average reader to read the same sentence.”
This week, Bull was awarded the first-ever Beverly Whitfield Memorial Textbook Scholarship from the Christian County Literacy Council.
“It makes me really happy to know that people care, that people have scholarships like this that help people like me who don’t have a lot of money, but need education for what I want to do,” Bull said. ....
