A serious windstorm is still raging over parts of the Plains and Upper Midwest after bringing wind gusts above 100 mph that roared through the Rockies and parts of the Plains. The storm, which will generate hours of damaging winds as far east as the Twin Cities, knocked out power to more than 700,000 in the Pacific Northwest on Wednesday.
At least 180,000 remained in the dark early Thursday in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana, a number that will likely grow as the strong gusts expand east. ....

GREAT FALLS â The powerful winds rocking most of Montana today are causing widespread damage. The National Weather Service in Great Falls said: If there is any way you can avoid travel for the remainder of the afternoon across north-central and central Montana, please do so. This is an extreme wind event even for this area.
The strongest wind gust recorded in Great Falls as of early Wednesday afternoon was 76 miles per hour; stronger gusts have been recorded in other areas, notably along the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountain Front. ....

A windstorm with gusts over 70 mph struck Great Falls, Montana, on Wednesday, January 13, causing property damage and power outages in the region, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).Footage shared by Christian Cassell shows strong winds blowing a 5,000 gallon underground fuel tank across Interstate 15, the NWS Great Falls wrote.On Wednesday afternoon, the Montana Department of Transportation reported downed power lines and road closures in the impacted region.The NWS forecast the strongest winds to surge into the afternoon, leading to more power outages, tree and roof damage, and blowing dust.
