Wood River hears ADA transition plan FacebookTwitterEmail WOOD RIVER A public hearing was held on the city’s Americans with Disabilities Act Transition Plan Monday night. Public Works Director Steve Palen gave updates to the plan, which came through the Wood River Fire Department, the public library with minor changes, as well as the Public Works Department regarding curbing and sidewalk improvements along 6th Street and Ferguson Avenue. The meeting was followed by the city council meeting where Wood River Mayor Cheryl Maguire reminded residents that late fees on water bills are being waived and the city is not shutting off water during the current COVID mitigation phase. ....
Wood River reflects on Capitol protests FacebookTwitterEmail WOOD RIVER Officials began the Wood River city council meeting Tuesday with a reflection on the events of Jan. 6 in Washington D.C. “What happened gave cause for concern for all of us,” Wood River Mayor Cheryl Maguire said, in part. “Even though our Capitol is hundreds of miles away, the visuals which came to us touched us and reached into our souls. We are a nation that believes in law and justice.” She also called on people “to resolve to unite for the good of America.” Maguire also informed the council that she is gathering information on an Illinois Department of Transportation Enhancement Grant for the city’s downtown area along Madison Avenue. She will share details of the grant as it becomes available, she said. ....

In April of last year, the City of Wood River approved the purchase of 69 acres of land commonly referred to as the 9th Street land for a project intended to reduce or maybe even eliminate flooding in the area that includes the Eastwood Subdivision. With more land there than they need, the city council has approved seeking Requests for Proposals for 28 acres of that property. City Manager Jim Schneider tells The Big Z the land could be used for a variety of things. Click here for Schneider s comments The land is to the east of the pump station. The city also appointed Chris Sobrino as Treasurer, replacing Tracy Kennett with a term expiring in May 2022. ....
