The sale of the NRHEG Star Eagle was finalized this week as Eli Lutgens purchased the publication from his father, Jim Lutgens. Jim purchased the Star from LaVonone Meyer in 2005 and acquired the Ellendale Eagle in 2007, combining the two to form the NRHEG Star Eagle. During his time as publisher, Jim worked hard to modernize the paper by putting the paper online, redesigning the layout, and adding color printing to the front and back pages. ....
NR city administrator hired NEW RICHLAND Editor The New Richland City Council announced Michelle Johnson has accepted an offer to be New Richland’s next City Administrator at its regular meeting, Monday, April 12. Many New Richland residents were surprised to hear of the resignation of City Administrator Sara McKay after just several months on the job. Council acted swiftly and offered the position to the person they felt was the next most qualified candidate from those candidates interviewed last year. Councilperson Loren Schlaak asked whether Johnson’s experience would allow her to do the job effectively. Mayor Gail Schmidt is confident she’s ready. “She comes highly recommended. She’s got city clerk experience. She knows the fund accounting. She’s got a degree in accounting. She’s got experience on the city council, and in the clerk [position/office], and now she’s been at the county.” ....

The upheaval appears to be damaging the service’s ability to respond to emergency calls. Over the course of the past two months, five out of roughly 40 requests for assistance have reportedly not been responded to. When the New Richland ambulance fails to respond to a call, the Waseca ambulance department is forced to respond. ....
NR council makes plans for 2021 NEW RICHLAND Editor A lot was discussed at the recent special meeting of the New Richland City Council Tuesday, Jan. 19. Originally scheduled as a workforce meeting, the first items on the agenda were the cause for the name of the meeting to be changed. During the previous week’s council meeting, Chris Schlaak proposed that the City cover former ambulance worker Monica Schutrop’s EMT refresher course. The idea was quickly shot down. “I don’t think it’s going to take much discussion because she isn’t a city employee anymore,” stated Mayor Gail Schmidt. “It wouldn’t set a good precedent. What would stop other former city workers from coming forward with similar requests?” ....
