Wisconsin legislature hold hearings to ban transgender athletes in public schools, Univ. of Wisconsin system

Hearings began Wednesday in Madison, Wis. for two bills that would do just that.
Democratic Gov. Tony Evers, a former state schools superintendent, has said that these bills will hurt children and vows to veto them.
Republican state Rep. Barb Dittrich authored one of the bills arguing that it will “even the playing field.”
She even dared to argue that banning transgender student athletes from competing in their gender identity helps to preserve the Patsy Mink Equal Opportunity in Education Act popularly known as Title IX. It is the federal law that prohibits discrimination in school programs based on sex. ....

Wauwatosa committee looking at panhandler issues in the city

Wauwatosa wants to address an increase in panhandling activity in its medians, more than two years after the city repealed a law that prohibited “aggressive panhandling.”
The discussion of the city s handling of panhandlers comes days after a 24-year-old woman was hit while asking for money near Mayfair mall. That woman is still in critical condition at Froedtert Hospital, according to Wauwatosa Police Capt. Luke Vetter.
In 2018, the American Civil Liberties Union of Wisconsin sent letters to Wauwatosa and seven other Wisconsin cities asking them to get rid of their panhandling laws, calling the laws unconstitutional in the wake of a 2015 U.S. Supreme Court ruling.  ....

Veterans Affairs officials are overhauling their application process for caregiver benefits while simultaneously fighting a court ruling that would force them to allow a legal review for individuals rejected for the program.
The move follows an order last month from a panel of U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims judges, which ruled that families rejected by the Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers should have an opportunity to appeal those decisions to the Board of Veterans’ Appeals, which handles other VA benefits disputes. ....

Caregivers of seriously wounded veterans who were previously denied benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs may get a new chance to appeal that decision under a court ruling issued this week.
The move has the potential to award tens of thousands of dollars to some families that have struggled to act as full-time caregivers to veterans, but payouts are still likely months or years away, depending on whether VA officials opt to appeal the ruling. ....

Madison, Wis. -
Wisconsin Republicans are poised to ban transgender students from participating in school athletics matching their gender identities. Legislators have prepared two bills that argue girls are at a biological disadvantage when competing against male-to-female transgender persons an argument debunked by various studies.
The ban would cover sports not classified as co-ed in public elementary, middle, intermediate, high school, and college athletics, even in the University of Wisconsin system. It would cover sports in independent charter schools, as well.
Author of the legislation, Wisconsin state Rep. Barb Dittrich claims that banning transgender athletes will even the playing field and uphold the Patsy Mink Equal Opportunity in Education Act popularly known as Title IX. The federal law prohibits discrimination in school programs based on sex. ....
