WEAV3D Inc. (Norcross, Ga., U.S.) an innovator in composite materials, manufacturing processes and processing equipment, has been awarded a $999,943 National Science Foundation (NSF) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase II grant. This two-year award will fund the design, fabrication and testing of a continuous composite forming machine that uses ultrasonic welding to increase the production throughput of WEAV3D’s patent-pending continuous composite forming process.
According to the company, this SBIR Phase II project addresses the traditional challenges of composite manufacturing. While these processes can produce lightweight, stiff and strong components, they suffer from high part cost and low production throughput. The WEAV3D process, called Rebar for Plastics ( ....

WEAV3D, based in Norcross, Georgia, has been awarded a $999,943 National Science Foundation (NSF) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase II grant.
This two-year award will fund the design, fabrication and testing of a continuous composite forming machine that uses ultrasonic welding to increase the production throughput of WEAV3D’s patent-pending continuous composite forming process.
This SBIR Phase II project addresses the traditional challenges of composite manufacturing in terms of high part costs and low production throughput.
The WEAV3D process combines weaving and composite consolidation into an automated, continuous process that reduces waste, cycle times and material handling costs. The company’s ‘Rebar for Plastics’ approach improves part stiffness and strength while minimising weight, enabling new innovations in the automotive and construction markets at a fraction of the cost and cycle time ass ....

WEAV3D Inc. (Norcross, Ga., U.S.) announced on March 31 that it has partnered with Global Alliance Automotive AG (GAA, Zurich, Switzerland) to promote the use of WEAV3D’s lightweight, locally tunable structural composites in the automotive industry. These materials are said to be a cost-effective alternative to traditional composites, steel and aluminum, and can increase vehicle fuel economy and electric vehicle (EV) range.
WEAV3D’s patent-pending composite forming process, which the company says can support automotive volumes of hundreds of thousands of units per year, produces a woven composite lattice structure from unidirectional (UD) fiber-reinforced composite tapes. These composite lattices are then overmolded into finished structural components using traditional molding processes a design concept known as Rebar For Plastics (see ....
