A brief history of the arts legends who got their start at Sumner High School
Local leaders are scheduled to meet again in March to discuss closing the first African-American high school west of the Mississippi River.

The latest round of proposed closures for Saint Louis Public Schools has targeted one of the most historic high schools in America: Sumner High School, the first African-American high school west of the Mississippi River. I’ve written about Sumner High School in the equally historic Ville neighborhood in the past, but I feel like it’s worth revisiting the hallowed halls of this “palace of education,” as I called it before. The closure of Sumner would leave the Ville neighborhood with no public schools, as far as I can tell. (The St. Louis School Board will meet again in March to decide whether to close the school.) And the 122-year-old building is not just another “aging” or “obsoleteâ ....

The founding of the United States on Enlightenment principles further developed the concept of “humane confinement.” The city of St. Louis likewise has seen a succession of jails over the course of the past two centuries that mirror the evolution of criminal justice in America and the action and reaction against perceived past abuses. ....

What was prison life like in St. Louis during the Civil War?

What was prison life like in St. Louis during the Civil War?
Over the course of the war, the Union Army turned to two different prisons in downtown St. Louis to control rebellious citizens and send a message to the entire city.
Painting of Gratiot Street Prison by Martin Stadler, c. 1864-65
When the Union Army seized control of St. Louis in 1861, it had a problem. While a large portion of the immigrant population was anti-slavery, much of the native residents, whose wealth and economic ties relied on the “Peculiar Institution,” were openly hostile to their new occupying military government. As I’ve written about before, it even broke out into deadly riots on several occasions throughout the duration of the Civil War. But the Union Army, under the command of different leaders over the course of the war, turned to two different prisons in downtown St. Louis to not only control rebellious citizens, but also to send a message to the rest of the city. ....
