Quin Taylor grew up watching her dad receive dialysis and live, miraculously, for 15 years after he received a kidney transplant. She had no idea that she, too, would get a new kidney 11 years later. “Doctors told my father that his life expectancy on dialysis was one to three years, and that, if he wanted to start a family, he and my mother should do so ASAP,” said Taylor, a Chatham native who lives in Bronzeville. ....
COMMUNITY: Chris Jeager, Director The Worcester Festival has announced a new project in association with the Worcester Foodbank to encourage the public to donate more to the charity. The Worcester Festival Pear Tree Project are encouraging people to get involved from 14 August by submitting poetry and thoughts on charity in the community via their website. They are also asking people to create pears from recycled household materials to hang on a giant tree outside of Worcester Cathedral. Worcester Festival Director Chris Jaeger said: “We are so excited about this year’s project and we hope that lots of people create a leaf or pear (or both) and learn more about community and charity and the environment and how we can all make a difference. The project has also been launched to local schools with lessons about the project themes to further engage the community in this brilliant project.” ....
The Oak Ridge Public Schools Education Foundation awarded more than $101,000 in grants to Oak Ridge teachers on Wednesday, during teacher appreciation week. “Regrettably, due to COVID-19 concerns, there will not be an awards ceremony again this year,” a press release said. However, the Education Foundation partnered with Oak Ridge Utility District and Millborne Bakery to deliver cookies for all staff in each school during Teacher Appreciation Week. The Foundation said it wants to honor and recognize the 2021 grant recipients in Oak Ridge Schools as follows: Glenwood Elementary Amelia Bell (Every Day Counts: Flipping the Script on Truancy) ....
