Confronted with the hospitalization of the cityâs interim chief administrative officer (CAO), Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney bypassed Lenora Reidâs deputies and selected his chief of staff to temporarily fill the position.
Weâre told the mayorâs decision was based in part on the advice of those deputies. If so, thatâs a head-scratcher. âDeputy,â by definition, is âa person whose immediate supervisor is a senior figure in an organization and
who is empowered to act as a substitute for this superior.â
Rather than go to his bench of professionals in a time of crisis, Stoney surveyed his roster of political appointees in selecting Lincoln Saunders, his chief of staff and longtime personal friend. City Council signed off on this move with near unanimity â blurring the lines separating the political and the professional, and breaching the protective barrier shielding the city workforce from elected officials. ....

After 66 years of donating to charities, helping individuals and organizations in the Richmond community and building a strong bond of friendship among their members and children, The Mothers Club has disbanded.
The group, which started with 10 women who were friends and young mothers, began meeting monthly in 1954 to share their experiences and tips as new mothers. The meetings evolved into doing more than discussing their children. They branched out to do things to help the community.
Their spirit to do more outside of their friendship circle had a clear motto â âBringing joy to the lives of those we touchâ â that guided them throughout their six decades as they helped area families in need, senior centers and children and families facing medical issues and other nonprofit organizations. ....
