Ticks and Lyme disease are becoming more of a public concern to Algoma Public Health.
Chris Glibota, public health inspector with APH, said “There are a variety of reasons for a potential increase in ticks in Algoma which include climate change (specifically an increase in the number of heat degree days per year), and changes in the range of hosts such as the white-footed mouse and white-tailed deer as well as migratory birds from other areas of Canada and the United States.”
Ticks require wooded and bushy areas to establish themselves, but as they feed on and are transported by migratory birds, it is possible to encounter a tick almost anywhere, though it is unlikely to find one in a backyard in the middle of the city, Glibota told Sault This Week. ....
