TAUNTON In a discussion of how racism harms health in the city, a Morton Hospital nurse described how prenatal care is harder to get for some expectant mothers. Since the hospital closed its maternity ward in 2018, there s a unique burden on families of color without their own transportation or whose members juggle several jobs, Jacqueline Fitts said during a Tuesday City Council committee meeting. There’s been a huge drop-off in prenatal visits, said Fitts, who was part of a three-person panel that included Kara Civale, vice-president of the Taunton Diversity Network and Tanya Lobo, founder of T.R.U.E. Diversity and a candidate for City Council. ....
TAUNTON Adding to public health concerns about a proposed gasification plant at the former Taunton landfill, the state s largest nurses union has sent a letter of concern to the city about the plant s potential impact on public health. The plant proposed by Aries Clean Technologies would take the region s sewage sludge and turn it into biochar to be sold to the construction industry. It would be located on a part of the former landfill site on East Brittania Street and could net millions for the city. Taunton City Councilor Barry Sanders read the letter from the Massachusetts Nurses Association during a City Council meeting Tuesday night. ....
