Historical park. Chris calkins talks about the battles that took place as part of the appomattox campaign. This is about an hour. One of the benefits of those who were not here last night when i was talking about the entire campaign from petersburg to appomattox i mentioned when i worked at the park alt appomattox i would come to longwood. At that time one book was published in 1859 dealing with the final campaign called to appomattox. Its a good popular book but i remember after reading it and studying it i had a lot of questions as to where the events took place, how did the armys get from here to there . So this book here set up my quest, then, to learn more about these sites. At that time when i worked at appomattox i worked with a gentleman a lot of you probably know. His name was harold howard. He portrayed an exsoldier who stayed on. I took the role of a Union Officer who was stationed in appomattox on provoes duty after the surrender. He and i were companions in trying to learn
Man, general William T Sherman and his progress in what he believes and hopes will be his final campaign of the war. Now sherman and grant are pursuing the grand strategy that they formulated in march of 1864 in cincinnati, ohio. The idea was to keep the armies in the east and in the west, the confederate armies so busy that they cannot reinforce each other. And not have a repeat fiasco in the battle of chickamauga. And now this strategy is working slopely but inex orablely. While grant keeps lees army bottled up around petersberg and richmond, sherman captured atlanta, georgia, in 1864. On december 16 the army of the cumberland under general george h. Thomas crushed tennessee the confederate second largest field army and one week later general sherman completes his march from atlanta to the sea by presented the city of Savannah Georgia to president Abraham Lincoln as a christmas gift. Sailors creek actually became a state park in 1936. And efforts were made to purchase more land for the park and to have it become a National Park. But something happened like world war
He was lucky in his predecessor in that regard. But so we cant take the honeymoon that were in with the current team automatically continues. It will require work. It requires we learn lessons from our experience with president karzai. Especially why it turned sour. We need to be very attentive not to repeat some of the mistakes that caused that souring to occur on our part but similarly i think for the afghans if they had one of the things that i learned, and ill end with that. When i went back to afghanistan after 30plus years i thought the afghans were kind of antiforeign and maybe would not want too much america. And what i discovered in the course of the first month of my envoyship, and ryan and i had the same experience because we were there at the same time. That period was the greatest fear was fear of abandonment. Rather than on balance of sort of at that point in any case of be being kind of run by or dominated by america. Simply put, marvin it is to be the longterm Strategic
