WEST MICHIGAN — Unemployment in the state increased to 7.5% as of December, 2020, as many left the workforce to care for children or because of the global shut down largely impacting service industries.
Despite that dip, three West Michigan companies are hosting hiring events Thursday, March 11th.
FireKeepers Casino Hotel
On-site Interviews: 8 a.m. - 10 a.m., 12 p.m. – 2 p.m., and 5 p.m. – 7 p.m.
FireKeepers is looking to fill full and part time positions, with many jobs being offered on the spot. Open positions include Front and Back of House services, Finance, Gaming, Food & Beverage, Hotel, Marketing, and Security. The casino tells FOX 17 certain positions hired through March 31st are eligible a $500 sign-on bonus to be paid in 2 installments one on the applicant s first day, and another on their 90th day of employment. WAYLAND, Mich. — Wayland Union High School announced they will be holding 2 weeks of virtual classes for all students starting Monday, March 8th.
School officials say the Allegan County Health Department recommended the move after an on-going transmission of COVID-19 cases were linked to the school. These cases include 3 or more students and staff who do not share a household and not in close contact of one another. Closure of the high school building to in-person learning
does not affect other buildings within the district. ....

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — March means hockey to 750 lucky Griffins fans as MDHHS allows limited numbers into Van Andel Arena.
The first home games will be the week before St. Patrick s Day for games against the Rockford IceHogs on Saturday, March 13th and Tuesday, March 16th. Season ticket holders get first pick for these games and the rest of the season. The Griffins say they will be notifying fans of available tickets for the remainder of the season through the Griffins Nation newsletter.
The team is also offering deals for fans signing up to become Full Season or 20-Game Plan members for the 21- 22 season including access to the best seats in the house and a free pass to AHLTV to see every game from home. if you haven t had enough time there. ....

ALLENDALE, Mich. — Grand Valley State University released a statement to staff and students Thursday after a reported mix-up regarding vaccine appointments.
The school sent an email (pictured) stating that COVID-19 vaccines were available as a result of appointment cancellations; however, the email did not address eligibility requirements. In turn, students who should not have received the vaccine were able to get their first dose. Others were already waiting at the entrance when they were pulled from the line, while many more learned their appointments would be canceled. ....

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run late Wednesday night in Grand Rapids.
It happened about 10:30 p.m. near Michigan Avenue and Division Street, according to a news release Thursday.
Police and medical personnel pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene.
The vehicle that hit the victim was described by a witness as a white SUV.
Investigators believe the vehicle is a white Nissan Rogue manufactured between 2013-2019.
GRPD is investigating a fatal traffic crash Division/Michigan. A pedestrian was struck and the suspect vehicle fled. Please avoid the area as officers investigate. Grand Rapids Police (@GrandRapidsPD) February 25, 2021 ....
