Credit: Jack Hill Questions have been raised about Hertfordshire budget proposals to defer part of a council tax ‘levy’ specifically allowed to support social care services. This year councils have been given the option to impose a three per cent council tax increase ring-fenced for social care – on top of a 1.99 per cent general increase permitted without a referendum. But Hertfordshire County Council is proposing to limit the social care increase this year to two per cent – deferring the remaining one per cent until 2022/23. At a meeting of the county council’s adult care and health cabinet panel on Wednesday (February 3) Liberal Democrat Cllr Ron Tindall questioned the decision to delay the levy. ....

Following a meeting of the council’s adult care and health cabinet panel on Wednesday, February 3, it was confirmed that 81 per cent of residents had received at least one COVID-19 jab And it was also reported that 40 per cent of care home staff have received the vaccine with ongoing work to encourage further uptake. In a press conference on Monday, February 1, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said “virtually all eligible care home residents in the UK had been offered a vaccine. ....
Mr Badger says that taking action to keep infection levels low in the community will have a direct impact on infection levels in care homes. “We want to be clear and issue a call for as much help as possible in the community,” he said. The more compliant we can be with lockdown, the more we do to protect people in social care.” Mr Badger acknowledges the challenges – and the sacrifices – people are already making as part of the COVID restrictions. But, stressing the importance of sticking to lockdown restrictions, he says that every day the infection rate comes down is a day where more people are protected – allowing more time for vaccination. ....
