Child Investors Multiply as More Parents Buy Stocks to Avoid Tax

The number of nominal stock investors under the age of 10 surpassed 110,000 last year, up 3.4 times from a year earlier.
According the Korea Securities Depository, the number of child investors stood at 113,014 in 2020, up a whopping 243.2 percent from the previous year. The figure jumped dramatically last year, even more than among 20-somethings (180.5 percent) or teenagers (144.7 percent) because it has become a popular tax dodge.
Parents mostly give their children stocks instead of cash gifts within tax exemption limits.
Parents can gift up to W40 million every 10 years to kids under 18 without paying gift taxes, an industry insider said (US$1=W1,129). An increasing number of them are buying promising stocks for their kids future. ....

Over 400 Koreans Leave Myanmar Since February Coup

More than 400 Koreans have returned home from Myanmar due to the ongoing political turmoil and violence in the country since the military coup in February.
Another 274 are expected to fly back by the end of this month.
To facilitate their return, the government is operating flights temporarily between Myanmar and Korea three times a week and plans to increase their number if necessary.
The Foreign Ministry said Monday that even with the additional returnees there would still be about 2,900 Koreans in the Southeast Asian country, with roughly 90 percent of them in the largest city, Yangon, where more than 250 Korean companies operate. ....

Moon's Approval Rating Plunges Further

President Moon Jae-in s approval rating has fallen even further to a record-low 32 percent.
In a Gallup Korea poll of 1,000 people last week, 58 percent said Moon is doing a bad job, many of them in their 40s, who are considered his core support demographic.
The proportion of supporters fell another two percentage points since a week earlier, though the proportion of outright detractors also fell one percentage point. Among people in their 40s, 47 percent were dissatisfied with his performance while 43 percent were still in favor of him, compared to 49 and 48 percent a week earlier.
The proportion of people who complained about Moon s real estate polices increased from a week ago, probably as a result of revelations that key officials close to him had jacked up their jeonse or Korean-style deposit lease prices just before the government put a cap on price hikes. ....
