A Garda submission on a contentious greenway upgrade in Cork City has added further controversy to the project.
Green Party councillor Dan Boyle called for a review of the city’s public consultation process on Tuesday night, as senior gardaí pledged to identify the author of the submission which argues against routing the Lee to Sea greenway upgrade between Harty s Quay and Hop Island along the southern shores of the Douglas estuary, behind houses at Island View and St Gerard’s Place. ....

Norwegian technology tests Maine waters - Mount Desert Islander

Norwegian technology tests Maine waters
GOULDSBORO In Norway, one of the world’s top two producers of farmed salmon, raising fish at sea in closed cages has been tested for nearly a decade. Multiple contained floating systems are in commercial use there now after yielding positive test results. Whether such farms’ scale, though, fit Frenchman Bay, where a ferry, tour boats, fishing vessels and pleasure craft already coexist, is among many questions sparked by American Aquafarms’ plan to grow fish there on a large scale.
On Norway’s northwest coast, beginning in 2016,  the “Eco-cage” system that American Aquafarms’ proposes for Frenchman Bay was tested by its producer, Ecomerden AS, at the salmon farm Sulefisk in the westernmost Solund Isles archipelago for a two-year period. Compared to open-net pens used in Maine, the closed, floating system fared better. In 2018, Ecomerden AS General Manager Jan-Erik Kyrkjebø reported sea lice, a parasite that feeds on ....

Letter to the editor: Proposed 'closed' salmon pens pose threat to Frenchman Bay

Letter to the editor: Proposed ‘closed’ salmon pens pose threat to Frenchman Bay

I am writing to express opposition to the massive “closed” salmon pen operation proposed for Frenchman Bay.
American Aquafarms, based in Portland and organized recently by the Norwegian company Global AS, is proposing a gigantic salmon farm. Plans are to place 30 sea pens, each 150 feet wide, on two leases, totaling 100 acres in the center of the bay.
The American Aquafarms pens would support a projected annual production of 30,000 metric tons, or about 66 million pounds of fish.
I have been a summer resident of Mount Desert Island for 40 years. I spend much of my time there boating and picnicking on the surrounding waters and islands. Hop Island in Frenchman Bay is a favorite destination. One of the two American Aquafarms lease sites will be yards to the north of the Hop Island anchorage. This is an area daily plied by lobstermen, sailors and pleasure boaters. ....

HAVE YOUR SAY: on upgrade of Mahon to Passage West Greenway

[email protected]
Last month we reported on plans for a new Cafe in the former Rochestown Railway station building, by a private developer. Now, as expected, Cork City Council is advertising a public consultation on the overall upgrade. This will be the “initial public consultation” on “Phase 2” of the “Passage Railway Greenway Improvement Project” (from Mahon towards Passage West).
Thanks to the May 2019 boundary expansion Cork City Council now controls lands from Mahon to (almost) Passage West. It plans on upgrading the existing walkway along the former railway line, which is now branded as a ‘Greenway’.
The City Council is undertaking preliminary design work to improve this section of the highly popular amenity. The project aims to improve safety, increase use of the route, protect and improve biodiversity and improve access along the greenway. ....
