COVID-19 driving migration to less dense places, including Kansas


Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic last spring, 8.9 million Americans have relocated, according to an article published this month by the National Association of Realtors. This accounts for an increase of about 94,000 additional relocations from the same time period in 2019.
Large cities saw the most significant losses in population during the first seven months of the pandemic, while states with declining populations at the end of 2019 experienced the highest migration gains. Kansas was among them.
During this same time period, one in three adults began working remotely, as compared to only one in 20 before the pandemic began. As people spent more time at home, they reevaluated what they wanted in their living spaces. Large yards, houses with office space and more affordable housing in less dense places appealed to the American worker who could now telework from anywhere. ....
