Zambia : Men's association concerned with surging cases of GBV

The Zambia National Men’s Network for Gender and Development (ZNMNGD) has bemoaned the increasing number of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) cases involving assault and murder despite recently commemorating the 16 days of gender activism.
ZNMNGD National Coordinator Nelson Banda said the recent case involving the Chitambo College of Nursing students calls for people’s input to curb such cases.
Speaking in an interview with ZANIS, Mr. Banda said the growing number of GBV cases is fast evolving into a national crisis that must be quickly addressed.
“Just when we were coming from the commemoration of the 16 days of gender activism then such a case happens. This is an indication that we need to take the fight against GBV seriously by putting more effort in sensitizing the public,” he said. ....

Jealous Boyfriend Hangs Self After Fatally Strangling His Lover Because She Fell In Love With Another Man.
A jealous 29-year-old boyfriend took his life moments after killing his girlfriend for abruptly ending their relationship.
The jealous boyfriend, Kaluwayo Mwika could not withstand losing his girlfriend to another man, hence he gruesomely murdered Mapalo Masiku, 21,who was laid to rest on Wednesday, December 16, in Luanshya, Copperbelt Province, Zambia.
Mwika, 29, committed suicide by hanging immediately after killing his girlfriend.
It is believed that Mapalo wanted to end the relationship because she had found a new lover but this didn’t go well with Mwika so he lured her somewhere near a bush where he strangled her to death. ....

In a statement, Monday, Zambia Police spokesperson Esther Katongo stated that Masiku’s body was found with injuries and taken to the mortuary after Mwika told her friend about where he had left it.
“Police in Chitambo of Central Province received a report of murder from authorities at Chitambo College of Nursing that female adult Mapalo Masiku, aged 21, a student nurse at the mentioned school was murdered by an unknown person. The incident is reported to have occurred on 13th December, 2020, between 12.00 hours and 13.00 hours at a nearby bush within the school premises. Initial investigations indicated that the victim had a misunderstanding with her boyfriend, identified Kaluwayo Mwika, who had just completed school at the same college. The suspect is believed to have called a friend to the victim to give direction to where the body was. The body was found with injuries and was picked and taken to Chitambo Di ....
