GOP votes to replace Cheney with Stefanik after backing from Trump

Cheney, for her part, did not vote, steering clear of the gathering altogether.
After the vote, Stefanik brushed aside the criticisms about her voting record, pledging that she’d fight to keep Republicans as one voice heading into the 2022 midterm elections, where they like their odds of flipping control of the House.
“The American people are suffering under the far-left, socialist policies of President Joe Biden and Speaker Nancy Pelosi
“We are unified, working as one team. … We are focused on putting forth policies and communicating them to the American people to beat Democrats, and we are going to win the majority in 2022.” ....

Roy to challenge Stefanik for Cheney's old position

Stefanik had been running unopposed for the No. 3 leadership post that became vacant when House Republicans on Wednesday voted to remove Rep. Liz Cheney
Both Stefanik and Roy are expected to address rank-and-file Republicans during a candidate forum later Thursday, with a closed-door vote set for Friday morning. A spokesman later confirmed that Roy is running for GOP Conference chair, a role which oversees messaging for House Republicans.

Roy, a member of the far-right Freedom Caucus, made waves earlier this week when he sent a memo to colleagues raising concerns that Stefanik was too liberal to represent the 212-member conference and that GOP leaders were rushing to “coronate” her. ....

GOP votes to dump Cheney from leadership

The decision was made by voice vote, meaning there will be no tally of the lawmakers who voted to dump Cheney, or of those who wanted her to stay on. Sources inside the closed-door vote said it was an overwhelming vote against Cheney. Some guessed the split was three to one.
That represents a remarkable shift from a similar challenge to her leadership status in February, when she won handily. And it marked the first time in recent memory that a congressional GOP leader was toppled by rank-and-file Republicans in the middle of their term through a formal vote.

Republican says Stefanik not conservative enough to be GOP leader

Roy, a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, pointed to Stefanik s past votes against the 2017 tax cut law and in support of Democratic bills to end former President Trump
Installing someone like Stefanik in GOP leadership, Roy argued, would undermine Republicans messaging against such policies heading into the 2022 midterm elections.

We must avoid putting in charge Republicans who campaign as Republicans but then vote for and advance the Democrats’ agenda once sworn in – that is, that we do not make the same mistakes we did in 2017, Roy wrote in a memo to his GOP colleagues.
Therefore, with all due respect to my friend, Elise Stefanik, let us contemplate the message Republican leadership is about to send by rushing to coronate a spokesperson whose voting record embodies much of what led to the 2018 ass-kicking we received by Democrats, Roy continued. ....

Seven House Republicans vow to reject donations from Big Tech

In a letter outlining the pledge, the Republicans cite accusations of the tech companies “unprecedented actions to silence” conservative speech.
They noted Twitter and Facebook’s decisions to ban and suspend former President Trumps’ accounts, as well as Google, Apple and Amazon’s action taken against the fringe social network Parler after the insurrection at the Capitol on Jan. 6.
“These monopolies have shown that personal liberty can be threatened by corporate tyranny just as much as by government tyranny. They have demonstrated that they are willing to relegate those who do not agree with their worldview to the status of a second-class citizen by cutting dissenters’ access to the infrastructures of business and public discourse,” the Republicans wrote.  ....
